Anna Karenina’s father has just died and she is confused and worried about her future. She decides to travel down to the home of her friend, Count Vronsky, and try and get advice from him. Her friend, Countess Vronsky, tells her that she should marry sometime soon, but she isn’t very clear on how to find a husband.

Her friend thinks that Anna might be worrying too much and that she shouldn’t think about marriage right now. She also says that it is important for a woman to get married because it will bring the family closer together and give Anna a sense of security in the world. Anna disagrees with this because she knows that her father did not like her husband, Alexey Storkov, nor did he approve of him.

She knows that their marriage would be difficult because of this.
